SPORTS PHYSIO & PERFORMANCE IN BASEL

Athlete support and performance in Basel

Sports physiotherapy, strength & conditioning and return to performance

For an athlete, reducing pain is only one part of the process. It is not the finish line. The harder question comes afterwards: are strength, load tolerance, confidence and sport-specific qualities really ready once speed, fatigue and competition pressure come back?

I support athletes from recreational to international level (after injury, during a return to sport or around a performance goal). Support can be individual, or integrated with the athlete’s coach, medical team and existing staff when that makes more sense.

FROM REHAB TO PERFORMANCE

Connecting rehabilitation with the real demands of sport

Rehabilitation should not stop simply because daily activities feel comfortable again. For an athlete, that can still be a long way from the real target. Is the body actually ready for the demands of training and competition?

Depending on the situation, I combine active sports physiotherapy with strength development, functional testing, progressive loading and sport-specific work. More methods do not automatically mean better rehabilitation. The point is to identify what is genuinely missing and build that back.

The sporting context matters as much as the diagnosis. An XCO rider, skier, trail runner and team-sport athlete do not need to prove the same things before full return to sport. Then real life gets involved (competition dates, travel, fatigue, limited training windows and last-minute changes). A plan that looks perfect on paper often needs to look very different in the middle of a season.

Assess. Build. Test.

01

Understand the situation

Injury history, current load, competition calendar, physical capacity and the demands of the sport are considered together.

02

Rebuild capacity

Strength, power, control, muscular endurance and load tolerance are developed around the actual requirements of the athlete’s sport.

03

Test before return

Progress is reassessed so return to sport is guided by function and capacity, not only by time or pain levels.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Elite sport has been part of my physiotherapy career from the beginning

Working with international athletes and teams taught me something very practical early on: health, recovery and return to performance have to fit into a real training and competition calendar. The calendar rarely waits for a perfectly tidy rehabilitation plan.

US Paralympic Ski Team (2019–2020)

Early in my career, I worked as a physiotherapist with the US Paralympic Ski Team. Training camps and competitions exposed me to the realities of elite sport from the start: injuries, recovery between races, travel and decisions made under time pressure.

Trek Factory Racing XC (2022–2023)

My experience then continued in cross-country mountain biking with Trek Factory Racing XC. I worked with some of the best athletes in the world as part of a multidisciplinary staff, in an environment where injury management, fatigue and performance had to fit around the World Cup calendar.

In 2026, my role with Sunn Factory Racing combines physiotherapy with health management. This includes following athlete health over time, identifying problems early, coordinating medical needs and supporting decisions that make sense for both training and competition.

This progression (from Paralympic skiing to mountain-bike World Cups) has shaped the way I work: understand the athlete in context, communicate with other professionals and make pragmatic decisions without losing sight of long-term health.

INDIVIDUAL STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

Strength & conditioning for athletes competing internationally

I also provide strength & conditioning support to athletes competing internationally in cyclocross, road cycling and XCO. The work is built around the demands of each discipline and complements the athlete’s existing coaching rather than replacing it.

Depending on the goal, this may include strength, power, lower-limb and trunk robustness, recurrence prevention or the transition back after injury. The key is to make the gym work fit the athlete’s real sporting load, rather than sit separately from it.

At international level, planning also needs to stay flexible. Travel, competition, fatigue and changes in schedule can shift short-term priorities while the long-term development remains consistent.

COACH & ATHLETE

At BMX Cernay, I am responsible for strength & conditioning for the Performance group. I also coach a pre-competition/recreational group. This gives me experience on both sides: developing the physical qualities needed for performance, and helping riders progress technically, build confidence and move gradually towards racing.

I also race BMX myself at national and international level, including qualification and selection for European and international championship events. That means I know competition stress, travel, training consistency and the challenge of progressing alongside work and injury from personal experience too.

Being an athlete myself does not replace formal training or scientific evidence. It does, however, help me understand very concretely what it means to follow a programme, manage load in real life, return after injury and be ready for a fixed competition date.

Good performance is rarely the work of one person

When an athlete already works with a coach, doctor, strength coach or other healthcare professional, I aim to integrate my role into that existing structure. Clear communication reduces conflicting messages and connects what we see in the clinic with what is actually happening in training.

My role is not to replace the coach. I bring a physiotherapy and functional perspective, clear progression criteria and, when necessary, support with load modification during rehabilitation and return to performance.

Elite sport taught me to work precisely. That standard does not stop with elite athletes.

You do not need to be preparing for a World Cup to benefit from a structured approach. The same principles I use with athletes (understand the problem, measure capacity, build progressively and reassess) are the principles I use with patients in the clinic.

Performance level changes the goal, not the standard of care. Someone who wants to hike again, return to skiing, run five kilometres or regain confidence after surgery deserves the same attention to progression and function.

Frequently asked questions about athlete support

Do I need to be an elite athlete?

No. The demands change with performance level, but the principle does not. Structured support can be useful for ambitious recreational athletes, people returning after injury and athletes competing internationally.

How is this different from a standard physiotherapy appointment?

Physiotherapy may be one part of the process. Athlete support also looks at load progression, strength, functional testing and the real demands of training and competition.

Can I come if I already have a coach?

Yes. With your agreement, I can work alongside your coach or medical staff so rehabilitation, strength & conditioning and regular training remain aligned.

Can I be supported even if I am not currently injured?

Yes. The focus may be return to training, a strength deficit, an old injury, season preparation or a specific sporting goal. These services are generally provided privately.

Do I need a medical prescription?

A medical prescription is generally required for physiotherapy to be reimbursed by Swiss health or accident insurance. Strength & conditioning, performance support and certain private consultations can also be provided without a prescription.

How does athlete support start?

The first appointment is used to understand your sport, goals, history and current situation. We then decide what needs to be assessed, rebuilt or coordinated and what type of follow-up makes sense.

A goal, an injury or a return to sport to prepare for?

The first assessment helps clarify what support is useful and whether a one-off or more regular follow-up fits your situation best.
